Cancer survivor to leave a legacy of real grit                                                                  7/29/03

Marjorie Houck, Hector, has not let a 15-year battle with breast cancer stop her from fulfilling her duties with family and church members, nor dampen her interests in community and county affairs.

Most of all, she cherishes her involvement in her grandchildren and their shared passion for rodeo.
Marge, a 78-year-old farm wife, was recognized a year ago at the Renville County Fair for her contributions including lobbying support for a rodeo competition in 1997 and 1998.  Since then, she has helped her home town of Hector with contributions to youth groups, disadvantaged individuals, and rallied support for a grocery store when the last one closed in 1999.
Marge, like other cancer survivors, has maintained her medical regimen and supported other cancer patients in the process.
Marge’s family, children and grandchildren, wanted to memorialize her grit and determination.  Pete Houck, grandson and wife, Jill host United Barrel Racing Association Jackpots at their ranch in North Branch.   “There are a lot of young kids who want to compete,” said son, Art Houck.  “These kids come with an old horse, and the best equipment they can afford.  Nonetheless, they try real hard in spite of their equipment and experience disadvantages.  We thought they should be recognized, so  we custom-made breast straps that help hold the saddle in place.”  The strap is stamped “Real Grit” on the left face and is initialed “M.H.” with the year on the right face.  The family also established a plaque which will list the name of the young person who is recognized each year.  This plaque will be displayed at each barrel race event.  Some of the proceeds at the barrel racing events will be donated to the American Cancer Society.
“Through this award we hope that our Mother’s will to succeed in her race with cancer will live on in the hearts and minds of youth who try the hardest with all that they have,” said  Art.
